Below is a short letter about why I wrote this map:
Dear fellow traveler,
If you recognise yourself in any of the following…
- You sometimes feel confused by conflicting thoughts and impulses
- Your emotions can overwhelm you or make you doubt your own perception
- You often feel torn between being true to yourself and belonging in the world
- You sometimes feel afraid or unsteady at the thought of trusting yourself
- You know what alignment feels like, but cannot seem to stay there consistently
…then what follows may speak to you.
For as long as I can remember, I have been searching for answers. As a child growing up between cultures, in an unstable and emotionally complex environment, I learned early to ask: Who are we? Why do we become who we are? Why does it feel so difficult to be human?
I studied linguistics and anthropology before becoming a therapist. I spent decades reading, learning, and working with others and with myself. I also spent many years struggling with depression, desperately searching for an exit door: a way out of internal hopelessness. And that is what kept me going: the quiet certainty that such a door existed, and that if I found it, I would be able to open it for others.
I did find it, though not in the way I expected.
For years, I believed the answer lay in discovering our core: that authentic self hidden beneath conditioning. But I have come to understand that it is not about finding a core. It is about orientation. The question is not: Who am I? But: Where am I? From where in myself am I relating, choosing, reacting, and building my life?
That shift changed how I understood everything. Through years of deep personal work and professional practice, I discovered what I now call a map of orientation:
- how we come to depend on the outside world
- how we lose ourselves while searching for safety through belonging, identity and performance
- how we can relocate to a steadier internal ground
This short book, Becoming Oneself: A Preliminary Map, is my offering to you.
It is not a self-help manual. It will not give you formulas to fix yourself or strategies to become someone new. What it offers is existential cartography: a way of seeing how meaning and identity are formed in us, and how we can stand differently in the midst of life.

Until then, I wish you fair winds on your journey,
